The state Attorney General’s Office Consumer Protection Unit is hosting three shredding events this month to help prevent Delaware residents from falling victim to identity theft.

Shredding bank statements, bills and other documents containing personal information is an easy way to prevent identity theft.

The first event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the Lowe’s/BJ’s parking lot of the Peninsula Crossing Shopping Center on U.S. 13 near Millsboro.

Each resident can bring up to three file-sized boxes of documents, which may contain paper file folders, staples and paperclips. Emptied boxes will be returned.

On April 12, the event will be held at the DelDOT Administration Building parking lot at 800 Bay Road, south of the U.S. 13/U.S. 113 split in Dover. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On April 26, the final event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the William Penn High School parking lot at 713 East Basin Road near New Castle.

According to the government, 7 percent of people over the age of 16 were victims of identity theft in 2012 and 85 percent of the incidents involved fradulent use of existing account information from credit cards or bank accounts. Overall financial loss of credit card theft in 2012 reach nearly $25 billion nationally.
